Minecraft Dungeons review – Best Buy Blog

The game Minecraft no longer needs a presentation. Despite its venerable age, it remains as popular with young and old alike. So it was hardly surprising that Mojang decided to make another game in this universe. After a game of action, adventure and construction, what type of game could do the trick in the cubic universe of Minecraft? So here is the “dungeon crawler” Minecraft Dungeons.

Atmosphera worthy of Minecraft

When I leave, I have to make a confession: although I really like what Minecraft brings to the gaming world, I don’t like to play it. Break for outgrowth cries. It is a big success with my children but I do not find my account there. My main problem is that I don’t like to build things. However, the world has always intrigued me so I expected to love this game a lot because it focuses on other aspects of the game and I was right.

The history of the game is not much more complex or complicated than the original game. In Minecraft Dungeon, the villagers all hate someone called Arch-Illager. Desiring to take revenge for all the abuse he had suffered at the hands of the villagers, he got hold of an artifact that granted him unparalleled powers. It will be up to you and your teammates to find it and defeat it.

Well again, we won’t win an Oscar for such a story but it does the job. Quite frankly, I was skipping the story lines to get back to fighting faster.

Oh and if you’re a fan of the Minecraft soundtrack like I am, you’re going to be pampered by Minecraft Dungeons.

Take your weapon and destroy everything you see

The principle of “dungeon crawlers” is very simple. You have a hidden map that will reveal itself as you explore it and you have to find the exit. Sometimes it will be hidden in another level underground and more often than not, you will have to fight against a stronger enemy to get out.

Obviously between you and the said exit, you will have to defeat dozens of creepers, slimes and all these other monsters that Minecraft players know well. It is not uncommon to have around twenty enemies on the screen! You will also find chests containing new weapons, minutions as well as provisions to help you.

The game mechanics couldn’t be simpler. A button is used for your main attack which could be a sword, a club or any other weapon you find. Then you will have a ranged attack with a bow or crossbow. Finally, as the game progresses, you will also find artifacts that will give you different powers that you can use at different intervals of a few tens of seconds.

It’s simple, but it gives enough pleasure to be able to arm your character as you see fit and to murder hundreds of enemies in a matter of minutes. For my part, I much prefer agile and fast weapons while my son favors heavier weapons that do more damage.

The game is not necessarily very hard and does not require a good learning curve. With its 10 tables, you can finish it in 4-5 hours but it is interesting to do it again in the adventure mode which is harder for it. For the asking price, the length is correct especially since we can redo all the tables as many times as we want. It is even announced that there will be extensions but it is not yet known what the price will be.

A very stylish cubic kingdom

Is Minecraft Dungeon true to the universe that the legendary Minecraft game created? Absolutely! Visually, it’s even much prettier than the original game since it fully uses the Unreal Engine 4 graphics engine.

My children were all greatly amazed that the style of the game was fully respected but everything was much more beautiful. For my part, I particularly appreciated that we are entitled to several different environments such as a swamp, snow and even pumpkin fields.

Even more surprising, the cards are sometimes quite large and require a good investment of time to make it from top to bottom. The “dungeon crawler” lover I was thrilled. I admit that I was still playing with the overlapping card but I would have preferred to have a reduced version in a lower corner. Nothing too serious but a simple preference.

One is good, two is really better

It is entirely possible to play Minecraft Dungeons alone but it would be to do without a really fun experience. My 12 year old son joined me for my entire campaign and it is clear that it has greatly simplified my life. We have rarely had so much fun playing together. Having had two other Xbox One controllers, I would have asked my other two children to join us to extend the fun.

It is all the more interesting that one can easily add or remove players during the game in two times three movements. Only regret, we can not mix the coop mode and the online mode. It’s all one or the other.

There is also talk of adding the ability to play with players playing on other consoles like PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch but the date is not yet known. I admit that I am juggling the idea of getting it for my Nintendo Switch Lite to play with my son when this feature becomes available.

I loved my time spent with Minecraft Dungeons. For a long time, I have been a big fan of Diablo type games and the simplicity of it has completely seduced me. Although I was a little disappointed with the length of the total game, I am aware that it is a fairly inexpensive game and so fun to play in co-op.

Fortunately, there are a lot of advantages to replaying the same levels to get more experience and better weapons than it makes the game practically a must to play.

+ Atmosphere faithful to Minecraft.
+ Playing in cooperation is so satisfying.
+ A simple game but with enough content to keep players interested.
+ Soundtrack as good as that of Minecraft.

– A bit short.
– Cannot play with co-op and online people at the same time.

Gaming experience: 4.5 / 5
Graphics: 4/5
His : 4.5 / 5
Potential life / Replayability: 4/5

Overall score: 4.25 / 5 (85%)
